Federal charges added for Cortland couple in child sex abuse investigation

CORTLAND, N.Y. (WBNG) — A couple from Cortland who already face charges as part of a probe into sexual abuse of a child now face a charge on the federal level.

Federal sexual exploitation of a child charges were filed Thursday for 35-year-old Christopher Perry and 38-year-old Sarah Gates, according to a news release from the office of the United States Attorney of the Northern District of New York.

Perry and Gates were arrested on April 4 by Cortland police as part of a child pornography investigation. Officers say videos and pictures were found on a phone that implicated the pair on numerous child pornography and sex abuse crimes against a girl under the age of 11.

Prosecutors say the abuse began in 2017.

The federal charge the pair face carries 10-30 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, at least five years of supervised release, and sex offender registration.
