OWEGO (WBNG) — It’s a whole new ball game over at Hyde Park in Owego as major improvements are underway for Owego Little League.

A work in progress, Owego Little League staff say the fields have new lights, a new batting cage and new dugouts are in the works.

“We’re just trying to spruce up the park and the field that’s been here for over 50 years,” said Owego Little League Executive Board Member John Loftus.

In the near future the plan is to see new electronic score boards, new fencing and paved parking.

Amid all this revamping, the Owego Little League announced it’ll be hosting the New York State 10 Under Little League Championship for the next three years.

Loftus says it’s not the big tournament, however, that sparked all the renovations, rather, it’s about the kids.

“Some of the improvements are to allow the kids to improve their skills and be and play on fields and facilities that will allow them to be more competitive as they move through baseball and into the school programs.”

Owego Little League is a program run and focused around the community that Loftus says brought the tournament to them.

“It says a lot about the community and what we do, but it really was a by-product of the work we do normally anyway.”

The state tournament will be held in July. Opening day for Owego Little League is April 27.
