NORWICH (WBNG) — Prom season is right around the corner and you’re probably thinking about what to wear. One church has you covered.

At the Canasawacta Valley Free Methodist Church (cvfree) there’s a prom closet inside with dresses you could wear.

“I actually went to high school with people that were struggling to afford to go and we live in a very poverty-stricken community and it was something that was very important for my self-esteem in high school so I thought it would be best to be able to help other people get that as well,” said Ciara Albrecht of Norwich.

The idea all started in Albrecht’s garage in high school and is now in a bigger location at the church. All you have to do is put down a $25 deposit.

The closet has prom dresses from sizes zero to 28 and shoe sizes from six to 12. It also features jewelry and purses.

Organizers ask for you to return the dress the way you received it.

“If they not can not get it cleaned or they were not able to get the stain out we do keep their deposit so then we can go get it cleaned ourselves so then the dress can then be borrowed my someone else the next year,” said Albrecht.

This service isn’t just offered for residents in Norwich. Anyone from the surrounding counties is invited to check it out.

“I love to be able to see their smiles on their faces when they pick out the perfect dress and they know it’s not going to be financial burden on their family,” she said.

Albrecht’s sister, Cheyanne, also helps out with the prom closet.

“Proms are a really important part of a high school girl experience and I think every girl should be able to have the opportunity to have that and have a dress that they’re happy with and that fits them well,” said Cheyanne.

The church will have a time next Saturday April 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the community to look at the closet.

It’ll also be open May 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

If those times don’t work for you, you can message organizers here on the Facebook page or email cvfreepromcloset@gmail.com.
