Wegmans workers remember manager Rich Gilbert

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — Wegmans employees are remembering their fellow manager, Rich Gilbert, who passed away recently, as a kind and dedicated person.

Gilbert was a long-time employee of Wegmans. Out of Gilbert’s 37 years of working with the store, 20 of those years were spent at the Johnson City location.

He passed away Monday at the age of 56, after a long battle with a heart condition.

Workers at Wegmans say though they knew he was sick for a long time, the news was still shocking to hear about his passing.

“It was tough to hear, for both the employees and the customers,” said Wegmans manager, Rusty Dewing.

Dewing, along with many others at the store, say they will always remember him by his loyalty to both fellow workers and customers.

“He was a dedicated person that worked at our store,” said Dewing. “He was always here when we needed him. Anytime that we needed something from him, he was always available in his office to talk to and he would always do his best to do whatever we needed him to have done in the store.”

Dewing says Gilbert will be remembered by his everyday dedication.

“He built relationships with the whole town, the whole city, so he was well connected with them, because he had been here so long and we have family members and also the community that has come in and just given us their condolences,” said Dewing.

Life Celebration Services will be held on Tuesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home in Owego.

According to Gilbert’s obituary, the family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
