Binghamton Zoo opens for the season

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Animal lovers, Saturday was the day you have been waiting for since November.

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park is officially open for the season, celebrating 144 years since the zoo first opened.

Dozens of people lined up to see animals such as lemurs, penguins and red pandas.

Zoo staff say they’ve been looking forward to this day for a while, and the recent weather is a perfect chance to come visit.

“Our animals actually prefer cooler weather,” said Rachel Davenport, the public relations coordinator for the zoo. “Even though it’s a little humid today, but they like the kind of damp weather, kind of on the cooler side. They’re a lot more active than they would be during the summer hours.”

In addition to the grand opening, Saturday was also the zoo’s annual Eggstravaganza, where children had the chance to earn eggs throughout the zoo by participating in activities.

The zoo will begin summer hours in a few weeks.
