ENDICOTT (WBNG) — The weather is finally warming up around our area and organizers of events like the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open are getting ready for the summer season.

Course staff made several changes since last year’s tournament at En-joie Golf Course, most of which are aimed to improve safety. There’s a new retaining wall by the 18th hole, better drainage and a new road by the first hole to avoid injuries.

Tournament staff say it takes a lot of effort, and a lot of people, to get the course ready.

“We’re always looking for volunteers. There’s a staff of eight of us that are the full time staff, but it’s the 1500 plus volunteers that make this tournament happen,” said John Karedes, the DSGO tournament director. “We couldn’t put on this event without them.”

Besides the actual tournament itself, other highlights of DSGO week 2019 include an appearance by world-famous golfer Jack Nicklaus on Wednesday, a Friday night concert by Entertainer of the Year Keith Urban, and more.

While there are several other events going on the same weekend, August 16-18, Karedes and the other staff say they’re not worried about how it might effect the tournament’s attendance.

“At the end of the day, whether their concert happens or not, we’ve got the CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year,” Karedes said with a laugh. “If you’re looking for a great experience during the summer, the DSGO is the one place you can’t miss.”
