RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — A driver is dead and a sheriff’s deputy is recovering in a hospital after a police chase ended in a head-on crash in upstate New York.
State police say troopers approached a man in a car in Richfield Springs around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after the man was accused of threatening a woman with a knife. The driver sped off and troopers pursued him east on Route 20.
Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy James Mateunas was parked with lights flashing at the intersection of routes 20 and 80. Troopers say the driver swerved into oncoming traffic and hit the deputy’s car head-on.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and Mateunas was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The driver’s name hasn’t been released.
