BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — A man who police say managed to evade officers for hours last Tuesday after crashing a stolen car on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood appeared in Broome County Court Wednesday morning.

The hearing for 25-year-old John Mehne ended up being postponed after his attorney stated she did not have enough time to discuss Mehne’s warrant out of Florida with him. The warrant stems from a burglary charge in Sarasota in March.

Mehne is facing charges of criminal possession of stolen property, burglary, robbery and aggravated cruelty to animals.

Police say after he crashed the stolen vehicle and left the scene, Mehne threatened a homeowner with an ax, killed a family dog, took off his clothes and went into two different chicken coops, all in the Kirkwood area.
