TRUMANSBURG (WBNG) — From the Southern Tier up through Central New York something is agreed upon: Ithaca is Gorges.
While the Ithaca area is home to more than 150 waterfalls there is one that’s just a cut above the rest.
At 215 feet Taughannock Falls is the highest drop east of the Rockies, that’s three stories taller than Niagara Falls.
The park offers visitors multiple trail options to see the falls and if you aren’t feeling a hike you can take in the view from the overlook off of Route 89.
“The kids went swimming. We also did the short hike and the long hike so the falls trail and the rim trail,” said Valerie Evans.
Taughannock Falls State Park isn’t just about the waterfall. Across the road there is swimming, boating and a large picnic area overlooking Cayuga Lake.
When 12 News was there this week, students from Boyland Middle School in Ithaca were enjoying a class picnic.
When asked what their favorite part of coming to the park was they had an abundance of answers.
“I liked swimming,” one student said.
“I liked football,” another added.
Meanwhile the Ancheta family from Miami, Florida enjoyed a baseball game on the green.
“Great day, no rain, perfect day, perfect weather. The greens are perfect. We went on a hike, came back, and saw this green and were like ‘this is it, let’s hang out’.”
