KIRKWOOD (WBNG) – Kirkwood officials are asking for help from the community to raise funds for a new all-inclusive playground for the community.
Since 2018, the Kirkwood Inspiration Playground Committee has been raising money for the Kirkwood Inspirational Playground at Valley Park, which aims to provide a fun and safe space for children and adults of all abilities.
“Without an handicap accessible playground, there is an opportunity that is not given to a lot of children in our community,” said the chairman for the Kirkwood Inspiration Playground Committee, Katie Legg. “We realized that we have many parks in our town, but none of them were handicap accessible and we felt it was very important to add a handicap accessible, all-inclusive playground to one of our parks.”
The proposed preliminary design for the project would include a rubber tile surface for wheelchair accessibility, a covered shade structure in the center of the playground, handicap accessible picnic tables and more bench seating throughout.
“The new playground will also have a play structure that has a ramp that is wheelchair accessible… we also have a music feature as part of the playground, a handicap accessible merry go round will be added and we will have both regular and handicap accessible swing as well,” said Legg.
Their original goal was to raise $350,000 for the playground by this summer, but committee members admit they are not very close to the goal.
“We still have a long way to go in fundraising still,” said Legg.
On Saturday August 10, Doug’s Fish Fry will be selling food to help raise money for the project at Schneiders Market from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The committee is hoping for community support to help give all children a safe place to grow and learn.
“We’ve heard from a lot of a lot of families in the community that are really excited for this playground because they will be able to bring their children out to the playground and play now where they weren’t able to do in the past,” said Legg.
