Prospect Mountain construction to affect traffic, starts Monday morning

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — The New York State Department of Transportation would like to alert motorists that the impending construction on Prospect Mountain will affect traffic in Binghamton.

Staring 6 a.m. Monday, I-81 North/NY 17 West Exit 3 will be closed for crews to reconstruct the exit ramp.

The DOT says a detour will be in place directing motorists around the ramp closure.

On Monday night through Thursday night, I-81 North/NY West will be reduced to one lane between Exit 3 and Exit 4A.  This lane reduction will only occur during night, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The department says construction on the exit ramp is expected to be finished on Friday.

A full description of the construction plan is listed below:

Starting Monday, August 26, 2019 at 6 a.m. and ending Friday, August 30, 2019 at 6 a.m. I81 North/NY 17 West Exit 3 (Broad Ave.) will be closed for crews to reconstruct the exit ramp.  A signed detour will be in place directing motorists around the ramp closure.  The signed detour route will be I81 North/NY 17 West to Exit 4A (Binghamton/Port Dickinson) to NY 7 North to Bevier Street to Broad Ave.  This work is weather dependent.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Thursday, August 29, 2019, I81 South/NY 17 East will be reduced to one lane between Exit 4 S/N (Binghamton/Port Dickinson) and Broad Avenue for concrete pavement grinding operations. This work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and is weather dependent.  Please expect long traffic delays during these times for this operation.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Thursday, August 29, 2019, I81 North/NY 17 West will be reduced to one lane between Exit 3 (Broad Ave.) and Exit 4A (Binghamton/Port Dickinson) for paving operations. This work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and is weather dependent. Please expect long traffic delays during these times for this operation.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Thursday, August 29, 2019, there will be periodic, alternating lane closures on NY 7 North between Robinson St. and Bevier St. for roadway reconstruction work.  This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily and is weather dependent.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Thursday, August 29, 2019, there will be periodic, alternating lane closures NY 7 South between Bevier St. and Frederick St. for roadway reconstruction work. This work will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and is weather dependent.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Thursday, August 29, 2019, there will be flagging operations on Front Street between Prospect St. and Bevier St. for construction truck traffic.  This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and is weather dependent.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Friday, August 30, 2019, there will be alternating lane closures on Broad Ave. from Abbott St. to Bevier St. for crews to mill and repave the asphalt roadway. Flaggers will be on site controlling single lane traffic through the work area. This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and is weather dependent.

Monday, August 26, 2019, through Friday, August 30, 2019, there will be alternating lane closures on Bevier Street from Chenango St. to Bevier St. for crews to mill and repave the asphalt roadway. Flaggers will be on site controlling single lane traffic through the work area. This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily and is weather dependent.

Nighttime Lane Restrictions:

Monday night, August 26, 2019, through Thursday night, August 29, 2019, I81 North/NY 17 West will be reduced to one lane between Exit 3 (Broad Ave.) and Exit 4A (Binghamton/Port Dickinson) for paving operations. This work will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night and is weather dependent.

The DOT would like to remind motorists that fines are doubled for work zone infractions.
