(WBNG) – State police and the New York State Department of Transportation are teaming up for a second day in a row to crack down on work zone traffic violations in Tioga County.
Operation Hardhat highlights the importance of safe driving through construction zones.
State police ramped up patrols in an active work zone in Tioga County on Thursday with a few troopers dressed as DOT workers observing passing vehicles.
State police say wreckless behavior in work zones puts the lives of many at risk.
“We want to target reckless behavior and that includes being on your cellphone, speeding, not moving over or slowing like you should be so again it’s all an active work zone,” said State Police Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska. “They’re not made up in any way we just want to see and observe how people are driving.”
State police say 21 drivers were ticketed for various violations in the work zone on one of the busiest travel days of the season.
