(WBNG) — Monday marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month 2019.
12 News spoke with the American Civic Association in Binghamton on its significance, and how our area is celebrating.
Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized nationwide between September 15 and October 15, celebrating the contribution of Latin and Hispanic people to the United States.
Part of the local celebration will be next month when the ACA hosts a dominoes tournament.
They’re inviting the community to come out and partake in the traditional Hispanic game.
The date of the tournament will be announced soon.
“It is important for every Latin and Hispanic because it is like our birthday,” says Evelinda Mateo, an Immigration Case Manager for the ACA. “We need something for a base to celebrate. And all the people do that and we try to do the same tradition.”
Also as part of the month, the ACA strongly encourages everyone in the Latin and Hispanic community to partake in their English as a second language classes.
