ENDICOTT (WBNG) — Preparations are officially in full swing at En-Joie Golf Club ahead of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open.
"After doing it for almost 48 years, our groups have gotten a hang of when they need to be here; when they don’t; what they need to do in advance," John Karedes, DSGO Tournament Director, said.
For the last few weeks, about 200 workers have been putting in anywhere from eight to ten hours a day to nip and tuck every aspect of the course.
"From a tournament staff, we’re here 6:30/7 o’clock in the morning and we leave when we’re done," added Karedes. "There’s no end time at this point. We eat meals together. We see each other more than we see our families right now, and that’s part of the job, and we all love it. This is what we work for the other 50 weeks of the year."
"We start with flooring, carpeting and then we, as far as you see, all the tents popping up, and then we start installing the 18th hole, which is the main hole on the course," Ramon Batista, Kirby Rentals account manager, said.
"It’s a timing issue and making sure that things come in as planned; in the right order," said Karedes. "It’s just making sure that everybody stays on schedule."
Event preparations include: cleaning up the golf course, setting up tents, tables and chairs, getting concessions ready, and preparing for the Blake Shelton concert next Friday at 8 p.m.
"So that [Shelton] stage, it’s actually a mobile stage," said Karedes. "It comes in as a tractor trailer. It opens up and they pop the roof up and put the wings on it. So that process, a little different than getting the golf course set up, but still certainly part of what’s important to us as we’re getting ready to host Blake Shelton and the fans."
Stage preparations for Shelton won’t begin until next Tuesday. They’re expected to be completed Thursday ahead of the concert Friday night.
But outside of Shelton’s stage, the remaining preparations must be completed by the end of this week.
"It has to be done by the time we leave here in on Sunday," exclaimed Karedes. "Would we love it to be done on Saturday? Absolutely. We know that we’re going to come here Monday morning DICK’S Sporting Goods Open week, and everything is going to be ready to go."
The annual summer event runs Monday, August 13 through Sunday, August 19.
