TIOGA (WBNG) — It’s not often a freshman earns Most Valuable Players honors in a Section IV football championship game, but Tioga’s Emmett Wood accomplished that for the Tigers on Friday night. Wood helped lead Tioga to its second straight Section IV Championship and earned 12 Sports’ Athlete of the Week award.
“He can do things you can’t coach,” said Tioga head coach Nick Aiello. “Which is why he is able to do what he can as a freshman.”
In his first season with the Tigers, Wood has emerged as one of the top running backs, not only on his team, but in all of Section IV. In Tioga’s Section IV championship win over Greene, Wood ran for 187 yards on 25 carries.
“We have always had really good backs,” said Tioga running back Emmett Wood. “So, I am just trying to fill in with how we have always been.”
“He has got a really good feel for the game,” said Aiello. “He has some physical features, as a freshman, that you don’t always see.”
Tioga always likes to run the football and spend a lot of time and effort into building a cohesive unit up front.
“It is really a broken record,” said Aiello. “But, it all starts up front. Our guys are doing a tremendous job up front and they understand our blocking scheme, which is probably a lot more than most.”
“One of (the linemen) is like my best friend for sure,” said Wood. “We always hang out afterward we got good chemistry.”
Wood is confident the Tigers have a strong chance to make a deep run in the state playoffs.
“We want to do the same thing as last week,” said Wood. “We just have to execute, and as long as we do that, it will be the same outcome.”
Tioga plays Onondaga in regionals Friday, November 10 at 5 p.m. at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
