BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — After six of seven games were postponed or suspended, the Rumble Ponies finally played baseball tonight, topping the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 4-1.
Starting pitcher Mike Gibbons’ only hiccup came in the first inning. Albany native Kevin Smith roped an RBI double to give the Fisher Cats the 1-0 lead. After that, Gibbons cruised through five innings, matching a career-high 8 strikeouts.
The Ponies landed on the board in the third inning. Sam Haggerty drove in Mike Paez to tie the game at one, and Patrick Mazeika followed suit with a two-out, two-run double to deliver the go-ahead runs. Barrett Barnes topped things off with an RBI double in the fifth inning, giving the Ponies the 4-1 lead.
Joe Zanghi and Stephen Villines pitched scoreless innings in relief on the way to a victory. Gibbons earned the win (1-0), while Villines earned his second save of the season.
