Binghamton native and oldest living former NBA player passes away

SYRACUSE (WBNG) – On Tuesday, former Syracuse basketball star and Binghamton native, Billy Gabor, died at the age of 97.

Gabor played at Syracuse in the 1940’s and also played for the Syracuse Nationals of the NBA and was believed to be the oldest living former NBA player.

Nicknamed the bullet for his speed, Gabor won the 1955 NBA championship with the Nationals. He averaged 9.8 points per game in his NBA career and was named to the NBA All Star team in 1953. Three year ago, Gabor was also inducted in the greater Binghamton sports Hall of Fame and his number 17 jersey is retired inside the Carrier Dome.
