VESTAL (WBNG) — An event record of 780 were in attendance Monday at Binghamton University’s Celebrating Women’s Athletics Luncheon to hear featured speaker Joan Benoit Samuelson. Benoit Samuelson won the Olympic Gold Medal in the marathon at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Elmira native Molly Huddle has also represented the United States at the Olympics. She set the American record in the 10,000 meters at the 2016 Olympic Games. Huddle is now running marathons and Benoit Samuelson has a very high opinion of her.

“I know Molly well,” said Joan Benoit Samuelson. “She’s one of the top American distance runners right now and I think if anyone’s going to break Deena Kastor’s current American record in marathon, I’d put my money on Molly.”

Huddle broke Deena Kastor’s half-marathon American record in January 2018.
