UNION (WBNG) — Maine-Endwell senior AJ DeSantis made his college decision official on Thursday, signing his National Letter of Intent to continue his football career at Division I FCS Colgate. DeSantis was a two-time captain for the Maine-Endwell football team and a two-time all-state honoree, which does not include his senior season. The Spartans’ offensive lineman also was a two-time member of the US National Football team, competing against Japan and Canada.
Off the field, DeSantis has just as many accolades on his resume. He is currently the president of Students against Destructive Decisions, part of YES Leads and a National Honor Society member at Maine-Endwell. DeSantis also volunteers at numerous places including the Southern Tier Soup Kitchen.
Maine-Endwell was filled with maroon and grey shirts on Thursday to support DeSantis’ decision to attend Colgate, showing how respected he is among his peers.
“He was voted on by his teammates for two years in a row (to be a team captain),” said Maine-Endwell head football coach Matt Gallagher. “So, I think we’ve only had one other and he’s coaching with us now. That’s a pretty special thing. When you can become a two-year captain at Maine-Endwell, then you’re doing something right.”
“I’ve had support through the years, Alex Wisniewski, who is just graduating (from Colgate) this semester,” said Maine-Endwell senior AJ DeSantis. “I know from the start when I walked on campus that I loved it there.”
Alex Wisniewski graduated from Maine-Endwell in 2014 and just finished his senior season with the Colgate football team. Wisniewski had an impressive career for the Raiders, being named a team captain this season. DeSantis told 12 Sports he talked to Wisniewski a lot during his decision process.
“I went through a lot with him,” said DeSantis. “I asked him class sizes, things like that, how well he fit in there and I knew, because coming from Maine-Endwell he was a leader also, so I know that, I feel like I can excel there.”
DeSantis will play offensive line, guard and center, at Colgate. He plans on majoring in Biology/Premedical Science
