BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — On Saturday night, the Binghamton Devils will honor veterans and active military members with Military Appreciation night as they host the Utica Comets .

Veterans and active military will receive free tickets to the game, and the first 1,500 people to arrive will receive special military patches. 12 Sports Director Nicole Menner caught up with B-Devils assistant captain Dakota Mermis ahead of the action, who was acquired by the Devils this offseason.

On what Military Appreciation Night means to the team:

“It’s exciting. For Canadians and Americans alike, we all respect and have a huge level of respect for our military women and men who have given up a lot to allow us to play this great game and allow us to have our freedom so it’s great we can celebrate that and have these special jerseys with it.”

On the mood in the locker room after Wednesday night’s 4-2 win over the Comets:

“It’s exciting, obviously a big opponent for us, same division so those points are pretty critical. Obviously the struggling in the first three against them, being able to bounce back and get that win obviously gives us confidence moving forward.”

On bringing a sense of leadership to the team:

“Yeah I think just the confidence in our game. Last night, you know obviously with any game there’s a lot of ups and downs. I think the mood in the room the game was that we were going to win the game. I think that’s a big part of being a good team, being a successful team just having the confidence that you’re going to come out on top. So if we continue to grow that, I think it will go well for us.”

The B-Devils travel to Rochester to take on the Americans Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The team returns home Saturday night to host the Utica Comets for Military Appreciation Night. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
