VESTAL (WBNG) — The Binghamton wrestling team is set to open the 2019-20 season Sunday at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open.
The Bearcats have high expectations entering this year after sending four wrestlers to NCAA’s in March- the most the program had seen since 2013. The Bearcats are coming off a 2018-19 season that also saw a program best sixth-place finish at the EIWA Championships.
The team returns three wrestlers who participated in those NCAA’s, including redshirt sophomore Lou DePrez who was just one win away from being named an All-American. Redshirt sophomore Zack Trampe also returns after a successful 2018-19 season, posting a 16-6 overall record, and Anthony Sparacio who holds the number one spot in the EIWA preseason rankings at 141 pounds. Binghamton adds eight true freshman who will compete for a starting position.
This year’s schedule is highlighted with match ups against N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Lehigh, and includes the Cliff Keen Invitational and Southern Scuffle – a tough schedule that will prepare the team for next March. Head coach Kyle Borshoff returns for his second full season in Binghamton, and he says the team is looking to build on what they accomplished last season.
“We’re coming off one of the best season’s our program’s ever had from last year, so really it’s just about building this year and doing better than we did last year so I’m confident in our training, I’m confident in the athletes we have and just excited to get started,” said Borshoff.
